“The room is sealed,” Douglas said, to no one in particular. “Whatever happened to Mr. Goss, it happened in a sealed room. There is no mechanism by which another person could have entered or exited.”

“Then how did the will disappear?” Nessa said.

No one answered her. The question sat in the room with the body and the bare desk and the bolted window, and no one touched it.


I distributed the letters after dinner.

Mr. Edmund had left them in the bottom drawer of his desk, in a manila envelope addressed to me with the instruction: One to each heir, upon their arrival, no exceptions. I had found them three weeks before his death, when he could still sit up and still give commands with the precision of a man accustomed to being obeyed. “How do you know they have nothing to do with it?” Harriet said.

Everyone looked at her. She had been quiet all evening, eating little, watching the others with the clinical patience of a woman accustomed to monitoring vital signs in people who did not know they were being observed. She was watching Douglas. I noticed that. “The simplest explanation,” Harriet said, “is not always the correct one. I spent thirty years watching people die. Some of them died because their hearts stopped. Some of them died because someone helped their hearts to stop. The difference is not always visible from across the dinner table.”

The room absorbed this. Laurence poured another glass. Sibyl touched the stem of hers but did not drink. Douglas looked at Harriet for a long moment, then returned his attention to his plate.

Nessa had been quiet throughout. She ate and she watched me. She watched me serve and clear and refill the water jug and straighten the candlestick that the draft from the west window was tilting. Laurence looked at her as though she had slapped him, and then he laughed — a short, startled sound — and said, “You’re right. That’s worse.”

The power failed at half past ten and the house became what it was built to be. I set candles in the sconces along the upstairs corridor and the cracks disappeared, the walls looked solid, and the proportions recovered the ambition they had been built with four centuries ago. Trewarren was designed for candlelight and wore electric light without conviction, the way an old woman wears a young woman’s hat. By candle you could believe the house was sound.

I made my rounds at eleven. Front door bolted. Kitchen door. Every window. I checked the study last. Mr. Goss sat at the desk in the position we had found him, hands flat, chin down, patient as a man who has all the time left in the world. The scratch marks on the floor were visible from the doorway. In candlelight they looked deliberate — three clean arcs scored into the stone by something heavier than a careless fire iron.

I closed the study door and went to bed.

At three in the morning I heard footsteps above me.

My bedroom is behind the kitchen on the ground floor — the housekeeper’s room, which has been the housekeeper’s room since the house was built, positioned so the kitchen and its keeper can hear each other through the stone. Above me is the linen room. No one has reason to be in the linen room at three in the morning. No one has reason to be in it at any hour, except me.

The footsteps crossed the room once, slowly. Stopped. Then a sound I recognised the way you recognise a voice heard once decades ago — not the sound itself but the shape of the silence it occupies. Wood against wood, a muffled scrape. I had heard it once, thirty years earlier, when Mr. Edmund pressed the centre panel in the east wall and it swung inward on hinges so old the iron had fused with the oak, and behind it was a passage no wider than a man’s shoulders, descending through the thickness of the wall to the cavity behind the study fireplace. A priest hole, built during the Catholic persecutions, when the Pryors were still loyal to Rome and the government’s men rode through Cornwall pulling priests from walls like loose teeth. No priest ever came to Trewarren. But the passage had waited in the dark for four hundred years, which is what passages do.

Mr. Edmund had been proud of it. The house’s last secret, he said. His grandfather found it and opened it out of curiosity and then closed it again and told no one, and Mr. Edmund found it by accident — a draft from the fireplace that he followed to its source on a winter evening when curiosity beat comfort. He showed me and made me swear. I swore, and I kept the oath for thirty years, because keeping things is what I do. I keep houses and secrets and promises and the angle at which a dead man preferred his reading lamp adjusted, and I do not rank these obligations. They are all maintenance. They are all the same.

I lay in the dark and listened. The footsteps crossed back. The panel scraped shut. The steps receded down the east corridor. I did not go upstairs. I did not call out. “The east wall of the study,” she said, “is eighteen inches thicker than the wall directly above it.”

I filled the kettle and put it on the Aga. “Old houses have inconsistent walls.”

“Not by eighteen inches. I measured with the cord — window to fireplace surround in the study, then the same span in the linen room above. The linen room is eighteen inches wider.”

I said nothing.

“The wainscoting in the linen room. Three oak panels on the east wall. Two of them have grain running horizontal. The centre panel runs vertical. The wood is the same age, but the join is different. It was built to open.”

I poured water into the teapot. The steam rose between us.

“Mrs. Jory. Is there a passage in that wall?”

I could have lied. Thirty-one years of service teaches you that truth is not always the most responsible building material. But Nessa had measured, and she was right, and the house had given her the answer before I decided whether to withhold it. The draft from the fireplace. The scratch marks on the floor. The passage was narrow and cold, lined with Tudor brick that sweated in the November damp. At the bottom, the passage ended at a section of brick that hinged outward into the cavity behind the study fireplace. Wedged behind a loose stone two feet inside the passage, at the point where the steps began to level, was a folded document. Cream paper, covered on both sides in Mr. Edmund’s careful handwriting, dated the twenty-first of September — three weeks before his death.

A will. Holographic — entirely in his hand, unwitnessed, never filed with any solicitor. It revoked all previous testamentary instruments and left everything — the house, the land, the investments, the contents of every room I had dusted and polished and maintained for three decades — to Mrs. Alma Catherine Jory.

Nessa read it aloud. Her voice was as level as a surveyor’s line drawn across a damaged wall. I stood in the passage with the cold brick at my back and the dead air in my lungs and I heard the words come to me from very far away, as if the will were a sound the house had been making all along, beneath the sea and the wind and thirty-one years of my own footsteps on its stone floors, and I had simply never been quiet enough to hear it.


We assembled the heirs in the drawing room. The storm had broken in the night. The morning was grey and still, the sea running white against the headland but without violence, the sky low but luminous, the kind of Cornwall morning that promises nothing and keeps its promise.

Nessa laid out the evidence. She did it the way I imagine she delivers structural reports — plainly, without softening, with a precision that respected the facts more than it respected the feelings of the people receiving them.

The passage. The oiled hinges. The holographic will hidden in the wall. The note in Mr. Goss’s briefcase. The scratch marks on the study floor where the brick panel behind the fireplace had been worked open and shut. She built the case without naming anyone, one element at a time, and I watched the room understand.

Six visits in the final year. A bedroom at the end of the east corridor, steps from the linen room. An actuary’s professional instinct for numbers that do not agree — the same instinct that would notice an eighteen-inch discrepancy in wall depth. Access to Mr. Edmund’s bedside table, where a draft of the holographic will had been kept. And motive: the holographic will disinherited every heir. If Mr. Goss — the only person besides Mr. Edmund who knew the second will existed — were eliminated, and the will hidden, the original five-way split would hold.

Douglas sat in Mr. Edmund’s chair by the window and did not interrupt. He listened to the evidence the way he did everything — with the careful attention of a man who is always computing, always adjusting the model. He had entered through the linen room panel. He had descended the passage. He had reached the fireplace cavity while Mr. Goss sat at the desk on the other side of the stone wall, the study door locked from within by Mr. Goss’s own habitual hand. The tray I had left outside the study door at four o’clock — left there when Mr. Goss did not answer my knock, left unattended while I walked to the drawing room to fetch Nessa — had been unguarded for four minutes. Douglas did not need four minutes.

The room was sealed because its occupant sealed it. The door was locked because Mr. Goss locked it. The window was bolted because Mr. Goss bolted it. The key was on the inside because that is where Mr. Goss placed it. There had been no impossible entry through any visible opening. There was only the passage, and the secret it carried, and the two people in the house who possessed that secret: Douglas, who had found it during his visits, and me, who had kept it for thirty years.

Nessa finished speaking. The drawing room went quiet the way a room goes quiet after a load-bearing wall is removed — the structure still standing but everyone suddenly conscious of the physics.

Douglas looked at me. Not at Nessa, not at Laurence or Sibyl or Harriet. At me.

“You knew,” he said.

“I heard the panel at three in the morning. I did not go upstairs.”

“Why not?”

Laurence said, “Christ.” Sibyl said nothing. Harriet was looking at Douglas’s hands — his left hand, the one that had stayed in his lap all through dinner, now gripping the arm of Mr. Edmund’s chair with a force that whitened the knuckles.

I did not answer Douglas. The answer would not survive being spoken aloud. I did not go upstairs because going upstairs meant acknowledging the passage, and acknowledging the passage meant breaking my promise to Mr. Edmund, and breaking a promise to Mr. Edmund was something I could not do — not because I was loyal or brave or good, but because his promises were the structure of my life the way his walls were the structure of his house. I kept the secret because I had always kept it. I kept it past the point where keeping became complicity, past the point where silence became a choice and a choice became a crime, and I knew this, and I kept it still.

Laurence, very quietly: “He left everything to you?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

Sibyl stood up and sat down again, as if her body had tried to leave the room and her mind had countermanded the order. Harriet placed her hand on Sibyl’s arm — the automatic gesture of a nurse, comfort dispensed before thought has time to intervene. Douglas had not moved from Mr. Edmund’s chair. He was looking at the holographic will on the table, the cream paper, the upright handwriting that matched every letter and instruction Mr. Edmund had produced in sixty-eight years of careful, governed, deliberate life. He did not deny what Nessa had laid before him. He did not offer an alternative explanation or a defence. He sat in the chair and he looked at the will and he was silent, and his silence was the loudest thing I had heard in thirty-one years of listening to this house.

Nessa folded the will and placed it back on the table. “The police will need this,” she said. “And the passage. And the room as it is. Nothing should be moved.”

“Nothing has been moved,” I said. “Nothing in this house has been moved since Mr. Edmund died.”

Was it love? He could have told me. He could have sat me down in this room and said, Alma, I am leaving you the house, and I would have argued, and he would have insisted, and we would have arrived at something that passed for understanding between two people who had shared a building for thirty years without once eating at the same table. Instead he hid the will in a wall. He told his solicitor. He wrote five letters designed to shake loose every guilt his heirs carried, the way you shake a winter coat to find what has settled in the pockets. He built an apparatus of concealment and accusation that guaranteed his death would function not as an ending but as a device — a last exercise of the intelligence that had governed his life and everyone who lived within the reach of it.

I did not say any of this. I told Laurence where the candles were, because the power was still out and the morning was dim. I told Harriet there were blankets in the airing cupboard. I told Sibyl that the causeway would be passable by afternoon and she could telephone the police from the village.

I closed the study door. I checked the window bolts. I walked down the corridor toward the kitchen, and the house settled around me the way it does when weather changes — the creak of roof timbers adjusting, the tick of stone releasing the night’s cold, the draft from the east wall that I had spent thirty-one years calling the house breathing and that was, I understood now, the passage. Open. Exhaling four centuries of darkness into rooms I had kept clean and warm and ready for a man who was never coming back.
